Double Page Spread (1) fraggle rock furs
I started my first double page spread for the coloured fur article with a two column layout. I have two wide text columns and a large headline above it. I have placed the two images covering the entire left hand page and over flowing to the the right. I think it is quite boring and regular for the tone of my magazine so I'm going to experiment more...
Next I removed the background of the images and added the page number and article chapter in the bottom corners. I think this is going in a more artistic direction so it's getting there.
Unfortunately, the images I was using aren't good enough quality. However, this new image is exactly the style of obscure fashion I am looking for. I made up a quick customised headline with a fur look to unite the article with the image. I also added a drop cap letter to attract your eye to the actual article.
I experimented with a black fur headline to keep the colour focus on the coat. However, I don't think it works and wouldn't stop me as I turn the page.
Next I added a blue version of the fur headline on top of the black one to give it a more eye-catching look.
I felt that the coat needed to be focused on more so I made the image around the coat black and white which I feel makes the coat even more vibrant than before. I am really happy with this result.
Here is the new image in the double page spread
I added a box behind the article title.
I tried a new headline design which I think is more artistic but needs to be changed to one of the colours in the coat.
I decided to have a large article on the woman in this picture 'Anna Dello Russo' instead and base it around a number of the outlandish trends she has worn this year. This dps being about the brightly coloured fur coat she has. I played around with the composition of the right hand page by moving up the headline and placing it slightly on top of a sub title. I also changed the typeface of the second sub title to the same font as the headline. This leaves a large area of white space to help break up the page and make it less crowded. I changed the columns of text to two columns to help it flow better.
I moved the page number and article sentence to the very bottom of the page and the headings down back towards the body text as I prefer the white space being at the top of the page - but I will continue to play around with this layout.
Double Page Spread (2)
For my second double page spread I decided to focus on the trend of paint brush stroke fashions. It has a 3 column layout that is very text heavy. I really like my headline that has randomly coloured letters in a painted style typeface. To make the DPS less text heavy - I placed the catwalk photographs in a grid format with one of the boxes having the pull quotes which I have made more interesting by making the quote marks oversized underneath the quote. I really like this layout as it has a lot of content but is in an organised grid format that makes the page very legible.
I added the box behind the article title.
I decided to make the colour scheme of the DPS more cohesive so I picked out colours from the catwalk fashion images.
After some feedback I needed to make this page more exciting and cohesive. I changed the typeface of the pull quote to the same as the head line and made the quote marks in a similar style to the headline where they overlap and change colour. I think this makes the pull quote look like one of the images as the typeface is very similar to the paint strokes on the dress. I have also changed the typeface of the subheading to that same typeface to continue the cohesive look. The image on the left page has been changed to use the entire page space - I think this is a more artistic approach which fits with the tone of my magazine. I have continued the background colour of the image across to the left hand page to help to unite the two pages. The headline is slightly angled to give it a less grid-like layout.
ADDITIONAL PAGES
I had some time before the deadline date so I decided to make up some additional pages for my magazine...
This page would act as the title dps for the "fraggle rock furs" article which is about the outlandish fashions that Anna Dello Russo wears. I wanted an eye-catching and colourful design that covered the entire page. The typeface is the same as the "fraggle rock furs" headline and I have picked out colours from the image to give a cohesive and creative look to this headline. However, I felt that it was too busy with the background image...
I followed the same design as the "fraggle rock furs" article to make the background black and white which makes the woman and her clothing stand out as a focal point.
Here is the finished page with the new image that makes the headline and woman stand out better as focal points. I have added a subheading and a mini paragraph to introduce the article. I think it is quite different to usual dps which works well with the tone of my magazine.
CONTENTS PAGE
I wanted a really detailed and quirky contents page so I decided to have an image and text grid like layout. Here is my grid before I added any details...
I started to make some of the triangles larger to have bigger images
I placed in the images and for their text boxes I picked out a colour from the image to make them cohesive and distinguishable. I am really happy with the result as it is really different to usual contents pages and I think my target reader of quirky fashion forward women would really respond and enjoy looking at the different boxes.
After some feedback that the page numbers weren't very clear for the contents page so I enlarged the numbers and made them white to act as white space.
Wes Anderson Article...
For an additional dps I decided to do an article on Director Wes Anderson as his style of films fits with the tone and target readership of the magazine. As the article will focus on his style of having colour schemes within his film's scenes; I want to have a clear colour scheme across the dps so I am editing the images I will use in Photoshop to have a pink filter using blending modes.

After:
I then arranged the images in a random order to fit with the strange tone of my magazine - it also has a lot of white space which I think helps to balance the bold pink background. The headline is also in this colour scheme and is very large to be a focal point. I have left a large gap between the headline and body text to allow it to not be too cluttered. The subheading is basic but I have emphasised the word 'exclusively' to give it some interest. The body text is unusually in a light pink which may be difficult to read but I think my readers will still find it legible enough and it works better with the colour scheme.
I then changed the typeface to the same as the one Wes uses in all of his movies 'futura' to allow readers to identify his movies with the article more.
I am really happy with how this page turned out as it is very quirky and different to conventional magazine articles but fits perfectly with the tone of my magazine.
